The Guardian Part 3 Jack Gatlin

 Jack Gatlin  Guardian

Cullen "C W"and Fannie Martin  Conerly  children

I also would like to expand the information  that I have gathered in my genealogy research to assist others in the journey to find their roots. I have tried to identify the relationships of the families of Cullen Conerly and Fannie Martin which relate to the guardianship of their children by Jack Gatlin, Moses "Mose" Conerly and C.C. Martin.

Cullen "C W" Conerly was born  December, 1863 was a son of Joseph and Ellen Conerly in Mississippi.  The other identified children of Joseph and Fannie Conerly  are Melesse (Malissa), Myra, Mary, Josephine, Richard, Louiza (Louisa), Benjamin and Mose (Moses). I have identified the family of Joseph Conerly in the Pike County, Mississippi federal census for 1870. Joseph worked as a farmer. The 1870 census did not enumerate familial relationships.

"United States Census, 1870," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MFSG-HLH : 12 April 2016), Ellen Conerly in household of Joseph Conerly, Mississippi, United States; citing p. 1, family 1, NARA microfilm publication M593 (Washington D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, n.d.); FHL microfilm 552,244

The children's names Moses 16, Cullen 14, Malissa 12, Mary 9, Myra 7 and Josephine 5 attended school in 1878 listed in the Homesville  School registration.,  The parent is not identified in the school registration.  They have been associated with John Conerly in the 1870 census and surmised that they are his children.

"Mississippi Enumeration of Educable Children, 1850-1892; 1908-1957," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/QK6W-DDT6 : 19 July 2017), Conerley in entry for Moses Conerley, 1878; citing School enrollment, , Pike, Mississippi, United States, Mississippi Department of Archives & History, Jackson.

Joseph Conerly's family was  also enumerated in the 1880 Pike county federal census.  It is in this census the his wife and children are identified. The family of Jack Gatlin is also enumerated on the same census page. This suggests that the lived in a close geographic area. From prior blogs, it was noted that Jack Gatlin was married to Alice Conerly Jeremiah Conerly's daughter.  Joseph Conerly and Jeremiah Conerly are brothers.

Prince Martin was not enumerated with the family in the 1880 federal census. Born in 1837, it is thought that he died from pneumonia in July, 1880  as found in the federal mortality schedule index 1850-1880.
Cullen and Fannie are enumerated with their children in the 1900 Pike county federal  census.

Cullen Conerly died August 7, 1907.  Cullen Conerly gravesite was found in the Conerly Cemetery. I do not know the cause of death and have not located a death certificate. Jack Gatlin, Moses Conerly and C.C. Martin became the guardians of Cullen Conerly's children.  Jack Gatlin was Cullen's nephew by marriage.  Moses Conerly was Cullen's older brother. C.C. Martin is possibly Charles Martin Fannie's brother.
