Mary Johnson Enslaved Part 6

Mary Johnson never returned to Maryland to live permanently. She married George Andrews both who were no longer enslaved remained in the same geographic area that had become their home. It was through school records that I looked for information concerning George and Mary Johnson Andrews and their children.   In the segregated post-Civil War south, racial designations of colored and white are present in many records. School records were not an exception. The geographic locality of many families can often be found by race in the school records. In the Pike County, Mississippi colored school records I found the names of Andrews children. In the 1878 school census the surname is spelled Anders.

The Andrews family was enumerated in the 1880 Federal Census. George Andrews was a farmer and Mary keeps house. It is important to note that Mary Andrews birth place was identified as "Md" Maryland. Emma J. was latter identified as Jane.

George Andrews is listed with his children in the Pike County 1885 and 1890 school census. The 1890 record is especially important because most of the 1890 federal census was destroyed in a fire. Unfortunately, I did not record the complete citation for the 1890 school census.  I obtained the information at the Allen County Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Mary Johnson Enslaved Part 5

It is known that Mary Johnson continued to live in Pike County, Mississippi after the Civil War. From information given by her descendants, she married George Andrews a former enslaved man. I have been unable to find proof of their marriage at this time. George and Mary Andrews recorded race as black enumerated in the 1870 census. The household of Thompson Andrews was recorded as white enumerated in the census above George and Mary Andrews. Because these families had the same surname I looked for a possible connection. I wanted to find information about George Andrews.

Thompson Andrews was also known as Wade Thompson Andrews.  His family is identified from two sources;  1) the book  Source Records From Pike County, Mississippi 1789-1910 by Luke Ward Conerly. In Luke Ward Conerly's book. James Andrews came from Georgia and he settled with his family on Bogue Chitto in the early 1800's. 2) a transcribed copy of the will of his father James Andrews on the website "Find A Grave". I have not be able to authenticate or verify the copy of the will. It is from these sources I have made a graph of the family. 

In item number four of James Andrews' will, he bequeathed to his son Andrew Jackson Andrews a negro slave boy George 15 dark complexation his date of birth would be 1835 at the time of the writing of the will.  This maybe George Andrews who married Mary Johnson.  The ages however do not correspond. From the 1870 census George date of birth would be 1823.   It is also important to note that Andrew Jackson Andrews married Lucinda Brumfield.  Lucinda Brumfield is the sister of Henry Sims Brumfield and Joseph Warren Brumfield who are in the "Ancestral Picture".

I looked for the other enslaved people listed in the will; John 25, Jane 15, Mike 12, Jerry 13 and Patsy 15 years old using the surname Andrews. I thought that they might be related and retained the name of their enslaver. My research was not exhaustive using Ancestry.com, Family Search.com, Newpaper.com, Chronicling America and Mississippi Archives and History website. I was unable to find these individuals.

I will continue to my research for information concerning George and Mary Andrews prior to 1870.
