The Story of Latimore Brumfield

Latimore Brumfield born August 26, 1920 was the female child of Sherman Brumfield and Georgia McGowen.  Latimore came from a well-established family in Pike County, Mississippi.  Her paternal grandparents   Irvin Brumfield (1846)   and Louisa (1849) were homestead landowners since June, 1881. Sherman was Irvin’s fourth child.

Sherman who was at least 15 years her senior married Georgia on August 7, 1917,  in Pike County, Mississippi. I obtained a copy of their marriage license in 2005.

At the time that they married Georgia had 3 children and Sherman had one child Alice.  They married shortly after the death of Sherman’s first wife Jane Collins Brumfield on June 19, 1917.

Latimore's life probably consisted of helping on the farm and going to school.  She attended Pike County, Mississippi schools.
She was listed in multiple Pike County school records the following are from 1937 and 1941.

Latimore completed her education and went to work after high school. She obtained a factory job in the area. While at work, her arm was entangled in the machinery.  She suffered a serious injury from this accident. She developed an infection and before she could receive the proper medical attention she died from the infection.  The antibiotic Penicillin was not widely available at that time. Latimore tragically died from complications from a job related injury.   Her date of death was January 17, 1944 at 23 years old. She is now buried in a grave near her parents Georgia and Sherman Brumfield. I do not have a picture or description of her appearance. However, Her death was overwhelming, a major loss that affected the family for many years.  This story was told to me many times years after her death by my mother who was her first cousin.
