For many, Memorial Day marks the unofficial beginning of summer — a time for family gatherings, shopping, cookouts, and vacations. Yet Memorial Day is also a solemn occasion, a day of reflection and remembrance. Let us hold one another a little closer, setting aside grudges and disappointments as we honor those who are no longer with us.
Originally known as Decoration Day following the Civil War, the observance began as a time to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. In 1968, it was officially recognized as Memorial Day and established as a United States federal holiday to honor the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the military.
This day is also one I have chosen to acknowledge and remember beloved non-military family members who have passed away. Today, I would like to recognize and honor family members who have died from all causes from Memorial Day 2025 to the present.
Together, we will remember their smiling faces, cherish the lessons they taught us, and celebrate the lives they lived and the love they shared.
