The Guardians Part 2 Jack Gatlin Guardian

Jack Gatlin    Guardian

Henry Sartin and Katie Gatlin  children

In previous blogs I have presented Jack Gatlin's family. He was an black African American farmer who established a homestead in Pike county, Mississippi in 1880.  Jack Gatlin's daughter Katie (Katy) married Henry Sartin March 4, 1906 in Pike County, Mississippi (File # 000049790 Book "L" page 556). Henry Sartin a 22 years old farmer is enumerated with his wife Katie 21 and son Cicero 1 years old in the Pike County, Mississippi 1910 Federal Census. They are the last family on the image.

I don't known exactly what happened to Henry Sartin but he died  approximately in 1913.  I have not been able to locate his death certificate at this time. Henry and Katie (Katy) Sartin had three additional children Shelly (male) born 1911, Elsie (female) born 1913 and Henry (male) in 1914. Jack Gatlin became the guardian of the children of Henry Sartin on October 13, 1913. On review Henry Sartin Jr. was born April 25, 1914 and Henry Sartin Sr. died  sometime in 1913. Jack Gatlin his grandfather who was the guardian did not list Henry as one of the children.  Katie was probably pregnant with Henry Jr. at the time of Henry Sartin Sr. death. The guardian document image is listed.

Katie Gatlin Sartin married Carroll "Cal" Rayborn in Pike County, Mississippi Jan 5, 1916  File # 00039428 Book "S" page 453. With the marriage of the widow Katie Sartin, Jack Gatlin probably was no longer guardian of the children of Henry Sartin. Jack Gatlin died October 27, 1924.  Henry and Katie Gatlin Sartin  three additional children Shelly, Elsie, Henry Jr. along with Cicero were enumerated in the Walthall County, Mississippi Federal 1920 census as step-children to C. R. Rayborn.  Carroll and Katie Rayborn had two children Dott Rayborn born 1918 and Alma Rayborn  born 1920 who are also enumerated in this census.  The family is listed at the end of the census image below near the bottom of the page.

Carroll Rayborn was born in Pike County, Mississippi on August 26, 1886 according to his World War I registration of June 7, 1917.  He states he has a wife and a five children. The five children were probably Cicero, Shelly, Elsie and Henry Sartin Jr. with Dott Rayborn.

In the McComb Semi-Weekly Journal on December 15, 1928,  reported that Carroll Rayborn who had been drinking heavily attacked his two step-sons Shelly  "Shirley" and Cicero Sartin. He fatally stabbed Shelly and seriously injured  Cicero with a stomach and arm wound. Shelly "Shirley" Sartin loss his life at estimated 17 years of age in the Tylertown hospital. Cicero survived.

I do not know if Carroll Rayborn was incarcerated for the death of Shelly Sartin. Carroll Rayborn however is not listed with the family in the 1930 Federal Census. Katie Rayborn is listed as a widow. The family is enumerated on two separate census pages.  The youngest child listed was less than two years old.  This suggests that Cal Rayborn was in the household shortly before the census.  In other documents, it is evident that Katie Rayborn is not a widow and the enumeration is erroneous.

Cal and Katie Rayborn  had more children Johnny 1920, Lavergne 1923,  Macllie 1927, Chris  1925, Nadie 1924(?)  Exie Will 1929, Eddie Ville 1932. I have been able to locate Nadie  only in the 1930 census possibly she might have died as a child.

Cal Rayborn was listed as guardian of the children in the 1941 and  1943 census Pike County, Mississippi school record.

"Mississippi Enumeration of Educable Children, 1850-1892; 1908-1957," database with images, FamilySearch(https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QK66-S1GK : 24 July 2017), Cal Rayborn in entry for Criss Rayborn, 1941; citing School enrollment, , Pike, Mississippi, United States, Mississippi Department of Archives & History, Jackson.

Katie was listed as guardian of her children in the 1947 Pike county, Mississippi not Cal. Katie Gatlin Sartin Rayborn died February 15, 1952.  I have not found the date when Carroll Rayborn died. My hypothesis is Carroll Rayborn died between 1943 and 1947.

Liddie and Calvin Caston son Isham Caston

Isham Caston

Isham Caston is thought to be a son of Liddie and Calvin Caston.  He is listed with his parents in the 1870 Pike County,  At the time of the enumeration, he was 12 years old with a calculated year of birth of 1858.   The 1870 Federal census does not identify familial relationships.

Year: 1870; Census Place: Township 2 Range 9 East, Pike, Mississippi; Roll: M593_745; Page: 128B; Image: 262; Family History Library Film: 552244

             Jesse 4
             Adeline 3

His name appears again in the Pike County School census in 1878 as 19 years old.  In the school records, the location and a child’s name is listed but not the parent or guardian.  Isham name is recorded with other children who have been identified to be children of Liddie and Calvin.

His name does not appear with the family in the 1880 census. He would have been 21 years old and possible living on his own.  I have not been able to locate him in the federal census or any other records.  I have not performed an exhaustive search and I do not know if he had any descendants but the search continues.  Possibly  a family member will know what happen to him.

Calvin Caston Last Will & Testament

A will and testament is a legal document that names a person or persons to manage an estate or personal property after the death of another person the testator. Calvin Caston had a will.

It was through a search of the website Ancestry.com  that I found the Last Will & Testament of Calvin Caston.  I have searched for several years concerning the date Calvin Caston died. The state of Mississippi did not register deaths until November, 1912. Calvin Caston died July 19,1912. At the time of his death, he was still a resident of Pike County, Mississippi.  His will and testament were recorded on March 29, 1912. Calvin was a member of the Masonic Benefit Association.  As a member of this association, he purchased a policy with a graduated payout with a maximum face value of $700.00 he bequeathed 1/3 to his wife Lydia Caston and 2/3 to his son Silas Caston. Seven hundred dollars in 1912 would have an approximate value of $16,874.00  in 2015. It is clear from this act that he wants to ensure that Lydia would have the financial means to care for herself and the family homestead would be maintained through his son Silas.
