Tombstone Tuesday Willis Brumfield and Neathie Gatlin Brumfield

CASTON CEMETERY

Willis Brumfield and Neathie Gatlin Brumfield

Some of  ancestor graves the of the African American Brumfield and Caston families are found at the Caston Cemetery.  The cemetery is an old cemetery about fifty feet off the road at  4022 Old 24 Extension Magnolia Mississippi according to GOOLE maps. There is no sign on the highway to identify the existence  of a cemetery. There is  however a cyclone metal fence gate at the highway entrance. Thanks to my cousin he showed me the location. The cemetery has old headstones with time and erosion the names have faded through the years.  Some graves are unmarked with the passage of time headstones are absent.  I located the headstones of Willis and Neathie Brumfield. In this blog, I have included the names of their children and their known spouses. I have recounted information in prior blogs about the family. Eddie Brumfield Sr. was their oldest surviving child and featured in earlier blogs. Their children are descendants of  Brumfield, Conerly, Cowart and Gatlin families.

Jack Gatlin Family

I have featured on several blog posts Eddie Brumfield Sr.  paternal line his father Willis C. Brumfield. These are the decendants of Liddie who was married to first Louis Brumfield and then Calvin Caston. I am still searching for more information. There are other branches that are connected to Liddie Brumfield Caston descendants.

Two branches from Eddie Brumfield Sr. maternal line are Gatlin and Conerly. In two previous blogs, I have already discussed Willis C. Brumfield and Neathie Gatlin Brumfield and their children which the family is listed in the 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 Pike County, Mississippi Federal Census.  The links are at the bottom of this blog post.
Jack Gatlin was born September, 1851 and died October 24, 1924
Neathie Gatlin was born September 23, 1882 in Pike County to Jack Gatlin Sr. and Alice Conerly.

Jack Gatlin Sr. and Alice Conerly Gatlin  date unknown

Neathie is listed in the 1900 Pike County, Mississippi Federal Census  with her parents and some of her siblings. Edmond Gatlin her older brother was married to Elnora Magee in January, 1899 and living in a separate household listed below his parents and siblings on the census enumeration. On the census record Jack and Neathie were married for 25 years.

Jack and Alice Gatlin  with children are also enumerated in the 1880 census.  Jack Gatlin occupation is listed as farming.   I find it interesting that Alice is recorded as "helps in field". Most of the wives in the 1880 census  are listed as "keeps house".

Willis Brumfield and Neathie Gatlin Brumfield Part 2

Willis Brumfield the father of Eddie Brumfield Sr. was a farmer. Willis, Neathie and their children Ethel, Bessie, Bertha, Agusta,  Eddie, Wilous, Milton, Thad, Herman and the twins Essie and Gussie lived in Pike County, Mississippi.  I have found the family enumerated in the 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 census.  Willis also was listed along with his father Tom Brumfield on the 1881 taxes for Pike County which I have not listed.

It is on the 1920 census the Eddie Brumfield Sr. appears as a 3 year old with his family.

Willis Brumfield and Neathie Gatlin Brumfield Part 1

Willis Brumfield and Neathie Gatlin Brumfield

Eddie Brumfield Sr. is one of the children of Willis Brumfield and Neathie Gatlin Brumfield.

Willis Brumfield and Neathie Gatlin Brumfield
date unknown

Willis Brumfield was born September 15, 1883(1880) and died September 1, 1948 at the age of 64. His recorded date of birth has some discrepancies. On his World War I registration form his date of birth was September 15, 1880. The Social Security application and claims Index 1936-2007 I obtained from Ancestry.com states his date of birth was September 15, 1883 and his parents were Tom Brumfield and Rosa Coward.  In previous blogs on the Social Security System, I have mentioned that there are often errors in information. To order a photocopy of the original Social Security application is $27.00. I do not have an actual copy of the Social Security application but I have a copy of the World War I application.

Willis Brumfield World War I registration . Notice wife Neacie (Neathie) is listed as nearest relative

Neathie Gatlin was born September 23, 1882 and died September 26, 1954 at the age of 72. This information was obtained at the first Jack and Alice Gatlin reunion in 1988.  I was unable to locate a birth certificate for Neathia or order a death certificate. I was however able to find Neathie in the Pike County, Mississippi school census for 1890 and 1896.
1890 Pike County  school census  Netha (Neathia) Gatlin 9 is listed with her father Jack Gatlin and siblings Harriett 14, Edmon 13, Emmit 12 and Loumenda 5

1896 Pike County school record Netha (Neathia) Gatlin 15 is listed with her father Jack Gatlin and siblings Edmon 18, Emmit 16 and Loumenda 11, Rosa

From the school records, Jack Gatlin was father for Neathie. I have also been unable to find a marriage certificate for Willis Brumfield and Neathie Gatlin Brumfield but from the World War I registration they were married prior to September 12, 1917.
